Last day of May Melee’s regular season. Fundamental day to decide which teams will qualify for the playoffs of the first Overwatch tournament. Virtually everything is still at stake. It starts on Thursday with two Paris Eternal matches against Atlanta Reign to follow Washington Justice playing against Boston Uprising.
Paris Eternal vs Atlanta Reign
Last day and still a lot to decide. In the West there are 6 teams to qualify for the May Melee playoffs, if the Houston Outlaws is already sure of the place in the playoff the other teams still have to fight for the qualification. The first game of week 3 sees Paris Eternal against Atlanta Reign.
Both teams have played two games, Paris Eternal is at 1 point, remember that this year the score changes wins and losses do not count anymore but the points do, each victory is worth 1 point, having won a game while Atlanta Reign has zero points having lost 2 games.
Both Paris Eternal and Atlanta Reign can still qualify for the playoffs but they need a half miracle and above all they must win both games scheduled for this weekend. Honestly it seems impossible but it is not said. Paris Eternal is 11th at 1 point from sixth place in the hands of Toronto Defiant, with two wins in the week at 3 points Paris could qualify.
For Atlanta Reign the speech is slightly different, with zero points but with two games to play, the math does not condemn them but it really takes a lot of luck and two wins of course to make it. Given the ranking, one might think that Paris is the favorite in this match. But you have to look against who against they won. After resting in Week 1 the Paris Eternal defeated the Vancouver Titans 3-1. The Titans are currently the weakest team in the tournament with 4 losses and zero wins and have currently only won 4 maps and 1 against Paris Eternal.
On the other hand, Atlanta has 2 defeats and zero wins but it must be admitted that it has played very difficult games on paper. In fact, Atlanta Reign lost 3-1 to Florida Mayhem and came close to winning against the Toronto Defiant by only losing 3-2. A searing defeat as Atlanta was ahead 2-0 and therefore only one point from victory before suffering a sensational comeback from Toronto. We can believe Atlanta wants to prove that they learned the lesson and will never make that happen again.
This should make you understand why Atlanta Reign is the favorite in this challenge. In addition, if he wants to try to access the playoffs Atlanta must win both scheduled games, two matches objectively within reach of Atlanta who will then play with the San Francisco Shock who are solid 1 victory.
